Former Abbotswood parent, Jackie Gilmore and a team of her work colleagues: Tony Cheater, Sean Smith, Chris Symons, Shaban Murati. Mark Abraham, Craig Edge and Jackie's son Marc are all completing in the Three Peaks 24 Hour Challenge on June 14th.
Jackie is undertaking the event in honour of
her youngest son,
Ryan who died of an undetected heart condition last year aged12.

One (of three) initiatives, Jackie hopes to raise funds for: a brand new heart ward (specifically for adolescence) at Southampton General Hospital. The other initiatives they are hoping to support are funding to further research on Parkinson's disease and additional support for Mountain Rescue (England, Scotland and Wales). This service (which is entirely free of charge and is vital) is funded by public subscription and donations and without this - the organisation would not be able to function.
The climb will start on June 14th, at 5pm, from Ben Nevis then travel to Scafell Pike and then finally Snowdon. This is a very demanding challenge, both physically and mentally, and the team have preparing hard for the forthcoming challenge by attending the gym for several sessions a week in order to be fit and preparing themselves for the hard challenge ahead. They have had practice runs on Snowdon and Scafell Pike and are now fully prepared for June.
A website dealing with their progress has been set up - please visit: www.freewebs.com/3peakschallenge.

How the Princes Trust helped transform this…..
The Princes Trust came to the rescue of Abbotswood School recently. Abbotswood was lucky enough to be chosen by the Princes Trust team – as a worthy recipient of their attention.
The Task : to undertake a garden make-over of an internal quadrangle to benefit all children in the school.
The Method : by identifying and
presenting potential areas of the garden area to the children and Head
Teacher Mrs Tina Bunting that
could/would benefit from their efforts.
The team then had to actually fundraise (sponsored abseil and carwash
to name but two) to finance the project and approach local suppliers
for favourable rates – then
finally carry out the project in practical terms.
Team Leader Pete Cornhill enthused, ‘I won’t say that it was easy – in fact anything – but!
However, the team
members who started/finished this off, learnt a lot about themselves,
and each other during the project, myself included. The team members
are all young people from varying backgrounds, who prior to undertaking
this project, had little, or no practical gardening/building skills.
There was quite a lot of self doubt along the way – and the need
to re-inspire people was necessary on more than one occasion. That said,
the completion of the project and subsequent handover ceremony to the
children put all this into perspective – and the fruits
of the team’s labour is self evident.
I know that this project will prove a catalyst for many of the team to
put their experience and talents to other things in the future – simply
because the overall achievement was absolutely fantastic and the school’s
sincere appreciation was delightfully obvious!’
