Princes Trust Get Involved

Abbotswood School has been successful in securing the help of the Prince's Trust. Abbotswood  will receive assistance with a 'make-over' of its Year 5 quad to aid disabled pupils and emphasise use of a currently under-used resource.
The Princes Trust team have to fundraise (see carwash poster) as well as actually physically assist with the make-over.
The timescale from planning to completion is extremely short (two weeks) - with the 'hand-over scheduled for Friday October 26 (during half-term).
Please watch for photo updates.

JEWSON SHOW THEIR COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Builders merchants, Jewson, came to the rescue of Abbotswood Junior School recently.

A team of sales executives led by Area Sales Manager, Richard Sheath, took part in a one-day garden make-over - the first phase of an ambitious plan to create a outdoor classroom/sensory garden area.

Richard's team took part in a 'team building' exercise - the end result being there clearance of an overgrown inner courtyard - in readiness of the next phase (the actual construction of the garden - decking etc) to take place in the summer holidays.

Richard's association with Abbotswood came about via his association with another of Abbotswood's patrons - Eastleigh FC.

Richard said, 'I was absolutely delighted with my garden make-over team and their efforts - and of course - the end result. Furthermore, I, along with Neil Sedgewick (Manager of Jewson - Totton) was able to offer Abbotswood a very good deal on materials for their outdoor classroom.'

Headteacher Mrs Tina Bunting was full of praise for Jewson's efforts, commenting, 'our school has been waiting a long time for this project to be realised - and to have this offer of help, both financially and practically, was too good to miss. Thanks to Richard and his team, the outdoor classroom is on schedule as a reality for September - and this will be of direct benefit to our children.
We will be offering Richard and his team the chance to come back later in the year - when the children can officially thank them'.

The balance of the work to be co-ordinated by Mrs Nikki Ellis, chair of The PTA - The Friends of Abbotswood.

Abbotswood clothing gets a new lease of life.

Unclaimed 'lost property' from Abbotswood pupils has found its way to some very worthy recipients in Uganda.

Ugandan school children have benefited from the assorted collection of sweatshirts, T-shirts etc that were collected on behalf of the Ray of Hope initiative.

This school in Uganda is trying to help these children break the poverty cycle by offering education - although there is a considerable way to go (as the photos of the inside of their classroom shows).

Please log on to  www.hope4c.org further information on how this initiative began and its future plans

Testwood Baptist Church - building on success!
Although some way off completion -  the exterior of the new extension to Testwood Baptist Church is shaping up nicely. This building programme was initiated by the Church to cope with their growing congregation. Completion/occupancy is anticipated around Christmas 2007.

Andrew Hemmens, Pastoral Leader at Testwood Baptist Church said:

"We're excited at the prospect of getting into our new building on Salisbury Road. Currently we enjoy meeting on a Sunday morning in our temporary home at Abbotswood School, but we're looking forward to getting on with the internal work at TBC - and there's lots to do!

Alongside building facilities for Sunday services and our work in the community we will continue to seek to build lives. I'm sure the new building will be an excellent tool as we seek to demonstrate the love of God to people living in Totton and the surrounding area."

Abbotswood is proud to provide a resource to local charities and organisations who want to reach the Totton and Waterside area, and raise interest and awareness of their initiatives.

Abbotswood in the Global Community

Abbotswood is very proud to be part of a wider community event, an initiative which is offering help at grass roots level, offering not so much as a 'hand-out' but more of a 'hand up'.
Through a flourishing association with Wendy Forrest-Charde, a local teacher, and her involvement with an organisation called Cruwys Global Trust, Abbotswood along with another local school Calmore Junior School have been providing some vital resources to equip a school in Ethiopia.
Surplus furniture has been collected by Wendy and members of her team, some being delivered by The Friends of Abbotswood - School PTA.
The photos show some of the packing of the items and it's subsequent loading into a container for shipping to Ethiopa, and some of the Ethiopian children who will directly benefit from this initiative.
Abbotswood children and their parents also collected/purchased sets of pens last Christmas, to further aid the Ethiopian children
As soon as photos of the container's arrival and subsequent unpacking in Ethiopia are available, they will be posted on this site with an update.
For further information on the work of Cruwys Global Trust in Ethiopia and elsewhere please visit their website (or by clicking on our 'Links' page.)

Abbotswood and the Local Community

Some members of Testwood Baptist Church kindly gave up some time to help with a quad mini make-over on Saturday April 8.
Once again their efforts resulted in a much-needed transformation of this area.
